How to study together
A small session can start with two to five state/capital pairs. Practise naming a state’s capital and naming its state from the capital, on screen or with printed cards.
Understand the task first
A capital is the seat of a state’s government. It is not always the biggest or best-known city. California’s capital is Sacramento; New York’s is Albany. A learner can read the prompt or have an adult read it. Identifying an outline is not required.
Learn a few pairs before testing recall
Choose familiar places or a small group of new states. Look at both sides and say the complete association together: Sacramento is the capital of California. In Digital Options, an adult can select two to five states; the default round has five cards.
Try the state-to-capital question
Show the state side and allow time to think or say its capital. The state map, approximate capital star and U.S. locator give the question context. Turn the printed card or reveal the digital answer to check the capital. If the pair is unfamiliar, read it together and return later.
Turn the task around
Show only the capital side and ask Which state? That side has the capital name and pair number, without a state name, code, map or other state clue. Turn the printed card to check the state, or choose capital-to-state in the digital player and reveal its answer. Both formats genuinely support both directions.
Keep the round small and unhurried
Let the learner think before checking. Use Next and Back in the digital deck, or take turns asking with a few printed cards. Revisit the pairs another day. The 50 double-sided cards offer 100 recall prompts on the same 50 pairs; reversing the question does not add new cards.
Keep practice notes in their place
Got it and Again are optional self or adult notes shared across digital directions. They are not automatic speech checking, a verified correctness score, mastery or proof of later retention. A correct answer today does not establish what will be recalled later.
Check setup, duplex printing and backup requirements or try five sample pairs.
